The Science of Choice

A framework for understanding how emotions, motivations, principles, systems, and meaning shape the choices we make.

The Central Question

What actually shapes the choices we believe are our own?

We tend to picture a decision as a single rational moment: options weighed, one selected. Epilogics starts from a different observation — that by the time we choose, much of the choice has already been shaped. The book treats decision-making not as one act of reasoning, but as the meeting point of several forces acting on us at once.

The Framework

Five dimensions of choice

Not stages to pass through, but forces acting at the same time. A choice takes shape where they meet — and where they pull against each other.

  • Emotion

    What do I feel?

How feelings such as fear, desire and unease colour what we notice — and which options seem real to us at all.

  • Motivation

    What do I want?

The needs and drives that give a choice its direction and energy: what we move towards, and what we move away from.

  • Principle

    What do I stand for?

The values and rules, chosen or inherited, that set the boundaries of what we will and will not do.

  • System

    What surrounds me?

The families, organisations, cultures and structures that frame a decision and quietly define what feels possible.

  • Meaning

    Why does it matter?

The larger story a choice belongs to — and what it says about who we are becoming.

To think independently is to know where each of your beliefs came from.
